Ipod Shuffle 1GB

What can I say about the Ipod? I've got a Shuffle, nothing exciting. It's green and called Kiwi. And has been living in a drawer for about nine months. Why? Well, I was at a computer fare, and found an mp4 player, Newsmy K8, 2 gb. It plays any format, videos, has games on it, has a camera on the back, and more then a few people have mistaken it for a phone. And a memory card slot, so if I wanted to I could put more then a little bit on it.
But back to the basic, Ipod Shuffle. Downside to Apple: You have to use iTunes. Not that I have any problem with that, because Media Player isn't exactly amazing.
Downside to the Shuffle: Its small! You could very easily loose it in a drawer for nine months.
Upside: Its very durable, I'm fully in the belief that if I threw this in the road and it got ran over by a lorry, it would be battered and probably squashed, but it wouldn't shatter into a million pieces like my K8.
Downside: It has no screen. I know so many people that can't stand this element of the Shuffle. But people, just lets, take it back a minute, Shuffle.... that's an odd name, this implies you put your playlist on shuffle and let the magic little box pick your music for you, or you could just learn your play list and buzz through it like everyone else on the planet. Stop complaining, its boring. If you wanted an mp3 player with a screen you should've bought one.
Downside: It has a dock. In my mind a lead with a simple plug in and away you go is a better idea, because with the dock, you get the factor of breaking the one crucial bit you need to a) charge your Shuffle and b) put music on your Shuffle. I've done it before, and I dare say I'll do it again. I do not approve of docks.
Memory: Sure I've got a GB to play with. Which isn't to bad for loose tracks, but I couldn't put an album on it and be happy. In my mind a Shuffle was designed for a lot of random tracks not for a bucket of albums.
It's small, it has a clip on the back, and you can quite happily sit on the bus flicking through tunes and feel like you have less chance of being beaten up because your not sitting there looking at a huge piece of technology that has a giant pound sign on the back of it with 'loot' beneath it.
My verdict: Its okay.

Hero/Yin Xiong [2002]

Taken from IMDB
8.0/10
In ancient times China was divided into seven kingdoms. Qin, the king of the western most province, is under permanent threat of assassination attempts. His greatest fears are the warriors "Broken Sword", "Flying Snow" and "Sky". One day one of the magistrates of his kingdom enters the palace, claims that he defeated all three of the emperor's adversaries and tells his story; how he beat "Sky" in a duel and used the love between "Broken Sword" and "Flying Snow" to subdue them.

My Thoughts: I adore this film. I adore the music. The story the action scenes. It has everything a good film should have. Although I believe the story has been changed slightly during transistion to english. Which I was not happy with in the slightest. To watch this film is to watch a moving piece of art. It is beautiful, visually stunning and is a film to watch.

Linkin Park

One of the greats. Everybody knows of, or has heard Linkin Park at some point. Baby goths and baby emos discovering music are spoon fed this. School kids find it and suddenly life makes sense, because of the screaming self loathing lyrics, because of the angry teenage songs. Songs that make you know everyone feels this way and your not alone. At some defining moment, everyone knows Linkin Park. And everyone has an album.
Mines 'Hybrid Theory'. I love a few of there other songs, I can never get enough of 'breaking the habit' even if its just for the video. And 'Reanimation' is an amazing album, even if its just remixes. I think they kinda let me down a little bit with 'Minutes to Midnight'. That angry passion that was there at the begining of 'Hybrid Theory' has seemed to vanish or at least, is a little depleated. There are some good songs on there, but I have trouble connecting with this album.
Linkin Park is one of those bands.

Sennheiser HD 205

Amazon
To deviate off into the value of good sound. These headphones, considerably less impressive then they were ten minutes ago when looking on amazon. Produce quality sound. I'm a believer in music, I'm a believer it can heal the soul, it can motivate, inspire and astound. But music is nothing without something to come out of.
Recently I bought myself a pair of these. Its a bit of a snug fit, and on a fresh piercing uncomfortable and sore might I add, but they produce a beautiful sound. Unlike my last phatt headphones, which where considerably cheaper, they block out near enough all outside noise, which I put down to the level of sound they produce along side the snugger fit. I would recomend these to anyone. Generally reviews are mixed. As for the tight fit its a little difficult to get used to, so trying before you buy is an advantage.
Compltely happy with these. Although, the Sennheiser HD215s are very very tempting. So very pretty.

Combichrist 'Today we are all demons'

Today we are all Demons[2009]
If your into heavy angry industrial techno then you're likely to fall in love with Combichrist. Recommendation: turn up your system, turn up your bass as high as it goes and bathe in the ambiance. The beauty of this album is simply every track has more levels then you may first believe. To appreciate this music fully it must be loud, otherwise your likely to think 'what the hell is this'. Or at the least, get your fattest headphones out, you know, those amazing things you bought the other week and still haven't gauged the full capacity of. Get those out. Put them on and fry your brain.
This isn't music your meant to hear, this is music your meant to feel in every cell in your body. So turn it up and feel it.

Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon are definitely one of the bands I listen to the most at the moment. Mostly I listen to 'Only by the Night', it being the most recent and the softest in my opinion. There are songs from the other three albums I am completely in love with, but the other three albums I can't seem to find the same love for.
In my mind 'Only by the Night' is near perfect. The song 'Crawl' has never appeared much on my playlist, to be completely honest, I'm not that fond of 'Closer' either. But apart from these two tracks I can't seem to get enough of this album. My LastFM being very true to this, most of the 400 odd plays being from Only by the Night.
Again an amazing band, they please easily and prove you don't have to have a generic voice or sound to get anywhere. I won't comment on the lyrics, because I'll leave you to find this wonder on your own.

Revis, 'Places for Breathing'

Released 2003 and the only album ever made by the band. Unfortunately. This album is a work of art on its own. It is beautiful and a definite obscure must for a wide collection. Rock of some pigeonholed description. Had the band stayed together, I'm certain they'd have made many albums of the same calibre. As a whole this album brings it all together for me, completely polished and chaotic but terribly beautiful.
A must listen.

Lily Allen, 'It's Not Me, It's You'

Alright, Still[2006]
Its Not Me, Its You[2009]

'Its Not Me, Its You', made me fall in love with Lily Allen. The album before, is far from her best, I found it boring and uninteresting. This new album though, is far better. Much of it is very bouncy, very cheery but all of the songs send some form of message. Its a nice album to get along with, its far from generic and very enjoyable.
Its varied and a different direction to the previous album. Personally, I think its a good move and this album is defiantly a keeper.

This is England [2006]

Taken from IMDB.
Given 7.9/10
A coming-of-age tale set in 1983 on the streets of a small English coastal town...
After being bullied at school, 12-year-old Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) comes across a small band of Skinheads lead by Woody (Joseph Gilgun), a charismatic and benevolent teenager who befriends the boy immediately. Bringing him into the fold as one of their own, Woody quickly initiates Shaun as a Skinhead to the dismay of his widowed mother. Having lost his father in the Falklands War, Shaun gleefully embraces his new found friends (and look) until the group is split with the arrival of Combo (Stephen Graham), an older, nationalist skinhead just released from prison. Once friends, now bitter rivals, Combo and Woody divide the group along political lines. Blaming England's economic woes, growing unemployment and post-war grievances on the influx of foreign minorities, Combo persuades Shaun and other members of the pack to make a stand, preserving England for the English. After attending a meeting of right-wing nationalists, Combo takes his new found gang of hooligans to threaten the local Pakistani community. In his contempt for others, Combo begins to reveal his own emotional battles with loss, loneliness and isolation. When his romantic advances are later rebuffed by Woody's girlfriend and former fling, Lol (Vicky McClure), Combo turns his hate, envy and prejudicial rage against one member of the group to disastrous effect... changing Shaun's viewpoint in an instant.

My Thoughts: I love this film. It is beautiful and sad and innocent all at once. It takes you on a ride through 1983 in the skinhead community. Everything I can say about the story is above already, it is beautifully wonderful. There's not much about this film I could say, it's touching and morbid and if you haven't seen it already watch it because your missing out on a beautiful film. Verdict: All time favourite.

Skins [2007]

Taken from IMDB.
Given 8.9/10.
A group of British teens tries to grow up and learn about love and life with little adult supervision. Sid tries to be everyone's friend and usually ends up on the short end of the stick. He is mostly manipulated by best friend Tony, whose girlfriend Michelle he is in love with. Tony is one to try anything once, including every girl he meets. He manipulates not only Sid and Michelle but anyone else who will let him. Anwar is just looking to lose his virginity. Maxxie is along for the ride and dealing with his homosexuality. Cassie is in love with Sid but has some mental issues. The parents are trying to grow up too and the teachers are being their friends and lovers so they only have each other.

My thoughts [Season One]: As a season its good, heart warming and certainly takes you on a ride. I found it took me a while to get into it, but once I was in I was really in. I found myself in love with the characters, finding none of them predictable, but the drama was good, it was real, it was stuff that life is made of and I was moderately impressed with it as a whole. As a series I think you need to be able to say you've watched it all just once at the least. Whether I'd watch it again or not is another question. But once is enough for now.
[Season Two]: Season two is better then the first, it begins six months after the first ends and again is very real, full of drama and the characters still loveable and easy to relate to.
[Season Three]: [UPDATE] Clearly the best out of the three seasons. I found I liked the characters more, the story more and enjoyed it a hell of a lot more then the other two. Definately the best, enjoyable and very addictive.
Verdict: Watch it even if its once and to fill some time, you won't be disapointed.

Nightwatch/Nochnoy dozor [2004]

Taken from IMDB.
Given 6.5/10
Hundred of years ago, the forces of light and darkness faced each other in a very violent battle on a bridge. In order to avoid the total slaughter, their leaders agree to have an armistice. Along the centuries, the two balanced sides are divided and the forces of light watch and control the vampires, a.k.a. as the forces of night. Among the humans lives "The Others", i.e., persons with supernatural powers including witches, sorcerers and vampires and with the free will to choose which side to join. The legend says that the two forces will be unbalanced by "The Great Other", and the side this powerful being selects will win the battle. In 1992, in Moscow, Anton Gorodetsky joins the forces of the light while hiring a witch for a black magic. In the present days, he faces the consequences of his act.

My thoughts: Well, its a Russian film, with the option of English dubbing which is very satisfactory by me. I have a soft spot for foreign films, usually subtitles are the only option. So this is a treat to begin with. Typically there are Russian accents all the way through which again is a treat. Very impressive. The film as a whole looks at the subject of vampires in a very different way to the way Underworld has. There are no werewolves, but there is a standard good and evil, a standard war between both. And a standard decider, the 'great one' who is supposedly going to sway it all forever. Very typical storyline. But this typical storyline doesn't fail to deliver with details. There are special effects and character twists that don't fail to impress. It is very difficult not to want to watch it after the first ten minutes. It is far from ordinary.
The plot twists and reshapes itself as you watch it and draws you in ever step of the way. A film that really doesn't fail to deliver. If vampires give you kicks watch this film, its unusual and really keeps your interest from the word go, if not a bit generic to begin with.

Constantine [2005]

Taken from IMDB.com.
For the sake of curiousity, IMDB gives it 6.7 stars out of 10.
The story of irreverent supernatural detective John Constantine, who has literally been to Hell and back. When Constantine teams up with skeptical policewoman Angela Dodson to solve the mysterious suicide of her twin sister, their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldly events, the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever cost.

My thoughts: Not bad, but not overly amazing. Keanu Reeves plays a heavy smoker, a human who sees angels and demons and has to bargain with God to get into heaven. I won't spoil too much of the story. As a film its not bad. Weak in places and certainly not the first film I'd pick to watch on an evening. It seems to me there is a wave of religious films centering around demons, angels and the like. And again this is a film that seems to loosely center around Keanu Reeves being the 'one', in this he is the underdog for heaven, and from what I see, the only one in this film. I am wondering when he'll develop a new act, or if there could be a new act. Again another film that ends with his monologue, speaking in reference to the Matrix only, as Keanu Reeves is not an actor I follow specifically. Far from a new film, verdict is: Its okay. One to watch, if you quite like angels, demons, heaven and hell. God and Lucifer. - And comic book based films of course.

Blue October

The Answers [2007]
History For Sale [2003]
Consent to Treatment [2000]
Foiled [2006]
Approaching Normal [2009]

In my opinion, one of the greatest bands in existence. The latest album, Approaching Normal, full of beautiful songs that captivate. More so then the albums of before.
There are bands you find which you can completely relate to, that absorb you with in lyrics and emotion. Blue October are one of these bands, providing that you are have a large spectrum of emotion, larger then that of a tea spoon, Blue October will slip there fingers around your heart strings and tug. You will listen, you will feel and you will remember through there music. Some describe them as indie rock, others rock, progressive, alternative. However you wish to pigeonhole them, they are beautiful. I recommend this band to anyone who has ever felt anything, ever loved anything, ever lost anything, ever lived with themselves through mistakes.
The strength of this band will break your beautiful heart over and over, just to mend it again, they will captivate you, they will bring you back from your own personal hell that you've vanished within and they could heal any wound given half a chance. Through every album you will enter in an emotional roller coaster. And we all have our favourites. We all have songs we can listen to over and over again. For me there are dozens of songs by Blue October that I can never get enough of. Given them a try. It will be a decision well made.
This is a band you can listen to for hours and then put down for months just to come back to and fall in love with all over again.
Verdict: Blue October, highly recommended.
